Life Can Change in an Instant

“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and that there is no time for hate.” – Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight #93 pilot Jason Dahl.

On this day, let’s take a moment to honor and remember all those who died on 9/11.

This blog was written on the day after Charlie Kirk, a political activist, was assassinated at a college event. Let’s also take a moment for him.

Today, all I can think about is how life can change in an instant. Charlie, his wife, and kids woke up yesterday morning like it was a typical day. Just like the thousands of people who lost their lives on 9/11. They too woke up that morning, ready to go about their day as usual. Just like many widowers I’ve met in this journey. Just like my own life. How Matt woke up one hot summer morning, proceeded to work as usual, and how the kids and I went through our somewhat boring day. What binds us all in common is that none of us ever saw what was coming.

In a flash. Lives were forever changed. If all of this doesn’t wake you up to the reality that life is short and precious, then what does??

Sometimes we need a slap in the face to realize the truth. Use today to launch yourself out of whatever troubles you’re going through. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a nasty divorce, the end of a friendship, an illness, the loss of a job. These are all situations of grief because we are at the end of a life we used to know.

Life is too short to hate something or to hold a grudge. Don’t waste your time wishing for this or that. Go out and get it! Don’t spend days thinking it’s your fault or what could have been done differently. The past is the past. Move on. Worrying about what you should have done in the past gets you nowhere. Instead, it will cause you more agony and stunt your road to recovery.

So today, in remembrance of the thousands of lives lost so suddenly and tragically, and in honor of the loved ones we’ve personally lost, go forth and live your best lives. That’s what they would want us to do! Cherish each moment. Don’t live with grudges. Don’t hold hate in your heart but instead, lead with your heart. Bring the light to those around you!

Equally, life can change in an instant for the better! Think about all those situations when you got fantastic news that changed your life for GOOD! You landed THAT dream job. You met the love of your life while out one night. You found out you’re pregnant! These are all instantaneous moments that also changed your life. So don’t always think it’s bad. Flip your mindset and think positive outcomes can happen too!
